Study of “Kvitebjørn kong Valemon“, Theodor Kittelsen.
Oil on canvas, 230 cm x 170 cm, 2025
The motif is taken from the Norwegian folk tale “Kvitebjørn kong Valemon“.
Kittelsen’s original is painted with watercolor, gouache and pencil on paper, 65 cm x 48 cm, from 1912.
The story is about a beautiful king who is transformed into a bear by a witch, as punishment for not wanting to marry her, and about the white bear’s meeting with the princess, who will eventually free him from the spell.
